iPhone 101: Clearing cookies from Mobile Safari

Filed under: iPod Family, iPhone, iPhone 101

This morning, I Farked my way over to this story about British Tea Cakes. The tea cakes, which appear to be nothing more than British mallomars, have been re-categorized from biscuits to cake. Far be it from me to dispute the accumulated wisdom of the EU high courts, but from this American vantage point if it looks like a cookie and tastes like a cookie, perhaps the tea cake actually is a cookie — and not a cake. I consulted TUAW’s in-residence Britishness expert Nik, who threw up his hands and asked (justifiably) whether this was actually related to Apple or its products.

Being in a cookie-minded mode, I decided to respond to a reader who asked about issues on the iPhone in visiting mobile versions of sites that were less than accommodating upon revisits. Some mobile sites hide “log out and log in as another user” details in their mobile formats. (I would point the finger at FireEagle/Yahoo–but lately they’ve cleaned up those problems rather nicely.)

If this situation happens to you and you really need to access a site as if it were your first visit, let me recommend clearing your cookies. And yes, I can hear you groaning: “You want us to do…what?”. Unfortunately, with Mobile Safari, cookie clearing is an all or nothing proposition. You can’t just clear cookies associated with a single site. It’s a clean sweep or nothing at all.

To do this, open Settings > Safari. Scroll down and select Clear Cookies. The iPhone throws up a pop-up confirmation. Tap Clear Cookies and quit from Settings. Your problem sites should now act as if it’s your first visit.

And, as for that whole tea cake thing? If you serve cookies for supper, are they tea cakes rather than biscuits? British people feel free to expound in the comments.

iPhone SDK Downloads Top 100,000 in Just Four Days. RIM, Microsoft Watch in Horror
It seems like only yesterday Apple’s servers were overwhelmed by the unbridled lust of developers, feverishly downloading the newly released iPhone SDK, going offline and back again like cheap Christmas tree lights. Today Apple is reporting that over 100,000 SDK downloads have been made in a span of just four days. That’s amazing considering that […]

404: Firefox NOT Coming to iPhone, Sorry Kiddies
The folks at Mozilla are still fuming mad over Safari-gate. The developers behind the popular open source browser Firefox stated flatly that no efforts will be made to port Firefox to iPhone, blaming Apple’s Gestapo-like restrictive software license. So this means I can’t look forward to a browser that consumes half my memory and grinds […]

There is yet another hot relationship building on the tech scene. iPhone’s YouTube video viewer has been enhanced by MxTube. The application is similar n all ways to the original iPhone video viewer, but allows you to download entire video clips and store them on your iPhone for anytime viewing - you don’t even have to be online!

This fantastic app has a search tool that lets you find videos based on their content. You can choose between differing levels of video quality to conserve your available memory space as well. When you download videos, they will not show up in your regular video library and they will not sync with your iTunes player. They can however be deleted one at a time just like any other regular video file. This easily frees up space on your iPhone in the event that you need it for other apps.

There are a few bugs as to be expected with any brand new app. Although there is a feature that allows videos to be stacked up, if you enter more than one in your queue, it will most likely cause a crash. You are also unable to exit a playing video unless you hit the home button. If you can work your way around these limited bugs, then the MxTube app for your iPhone is a great way to grab a ton of free videos from cyberspace without having to deal with the incredibly slow EDGE app or even having to sync with iTunes to rip.

Apple Patents Nike + iPod on Steroids: It Wants to Pump You Up

cuuuurl.gifThe standard rule of Apple patents applies: Just because it’s on file, doesn’t mean they’re going to put it out. But I hope they do, America’s fat ass needs this. It’s an advanced fitness suite, like Nike + iPod cranked up to 1100. There’s hardware that keeps tabs on your heart rate and other vitals, a rewards tracker, and a component for syncing up groups. All of it’s connected by an iTunes-like app that tracks your current fitness level, goals, schedule and a whole mess of other stats—it’ll even make a workout for you—which it syncs to your iPod or iPhone to follow at the gym.

When you fire it up for the first time, it interviews you to get a sense of your health, even asking about your financial and social status (if they suck, you’re stressed, and that does impact health). Then it spits out a regiment, based on how unhealthy you are and how healthy you wanna get. Then you just follow the routine on your iPod at the gym, with the hardware sensors providing real-time feedback on how hard you’re getting your ass kicked.

Apple definitely has an interest in fitness gear, and with Nike branching out, this might just happen. Oh, and first person to make a horrible iBod pun gets banned. [AppleInsider]

Simplify Media Mobile For iPhone Lets You Stream iTunes Libraries Over Wi-Fi

Simplify Media’s just released a new version of their Mobile suite for iPhone that lets you stream iTunes libraries from your friends across the internet. It works in much the same way the desktop version does. Load up Simplify Media on a desktop with a library that you want to share, then log into your Simplify Media Mobile on your iPhone (with Wi-Fi) and you can stream all of your and your friends’ music back over the air.

If you really want to stream on the go, without Wi-Fi, you could probably rig up a Wi-Fi internet connection sharing thing with a Windows Mobile phone as well.

We tested it over Wi-Fi and it streamed back all of Adam Pash’s songs without a problem (eventually). It crashed and hung the first couple times. [Simplify Media]

iPhone shortage hints at imminent refresh

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Apple, iPhone

Employee malfeasance and underwear gnome schemes cannot account for the nationwide shortage of retail iPhone availability. As many TUAW readers discovered to their delight, AT&T has been clearing out their refurb iPhone stock and Apple stores are short on the shelves. As Apple’s supply chain is almost certainly unimpaired, pundits can only conclude that we’re about ready to hit an iPhone refresh.

The question about the refresh isn’t whether it will happen or not but rather when. We were guessing June/WWDC for a 3G iPhone announcement and September for a delivery — after all, new cell equipment has to go through rigorous approval. Stock shortages indicate that at least a memory-based refresh might arrive sooner than later. Right now, Apple customers are experiencing 5-7 day shipment delays on their purchases.
