Is This the Back of the 3G, Next-Gen iPhone?

rumorediphoneback.pngTake this rumor with a grain of salt the size of your fist, but this is what some people are claiming is the back of the upcoming next-gen iPhone. It could very easily be a fake, but then again, you never know. What do you guys think? Do you like the glossy black or do you missed the two-tone design of the current model and the classy brushed metal? [iPod Observer via Boy Genius Report]

Quake 3 Arena Ported to iPhone; Let the Networked Games Commence

Holy butt-clencher, Batman! Quake 3 Arena has somehow found itself ported to the iPhone. Details are thinner than my scalp is on hair, but the video clearly shows a networked game going on in full swing. You may be thinking this sounds semi-neat, but let me tell you this; the game uses the freaking accelerometer for direction control, while shooting is done simply by tapping on the touchscreen. Now, I’m off to collapse in a euphoric pile, you check out the video and then do the same. There’s no word on the release yet, but hopefully it will show up somewhere once I am out of my aforementioned, euphoric pile state. We’ll keep you posted. [Crunchgear]

Nokia to Apple: Blah Blah iPhone Killer Blah Blah You Suck

Nokia said they didn’t care about the iPhone back when it was introduced, not even commented on it beyond a brief “smeh.” Then, they presented their iPhone killer concept, a demo that looked and acted exactly like Apple’s handset, even while it was “no competition for Nokia.” Now they have announced they are “readying” the final product, code-named Tube. They showed it yesterday, while pooh-poohing on His Steveness’ toy:

“We’ve done that [volume] since we’ve had dinner on Friday.”

That SteveBallmerism was pulled out of his hat by Tom Libretto, vice president of Forum Nokia, talking about iPhone’s sales, apparently forgetting that taller giants have fallen after similar words. Specially when he is conveniently ignoring that Apple’s record volume is just one non-subsidized model that competes with your top of the line—handsets like the Nokia N95 and the N96—in just a handful of countries (and for the longest period of its lifetime, in only one market, which is not as big when it comes to mobiles like Europe or Asia.)

Now, it’s not that we don’t think Nokia’s Tube can’t be a great success or that Nokia is in a bad position at all. They are clearly the N mero Uno, without a doubt, and for all we know, Tube could be the best thing since either the iPhone itself or the Beamz. However, publicly smashing a newcomer, a still small and young player in the cellphone market, doesn’t give credibility to Nokia, as the incumbent player: it gives credibility to the new kid on the block, who doesn’t only look smarter and cooler to the general consumer, but now also looks like a clear and present danger to the Finnish company.

And while all that happens in a single quote, there’s just a slide to show about Tube and still no planned date for shipment. [Inforworld]

Downgrading your 2.0 iPhone from the Pink Screen of Death

I haven’t played with iPhone firmware 1.2/2.0 yet, but I’m told that some developers have encountered what is becoming known as the PSOD: a pink-colored start screen that apparently replaces the “connect to iTunes” graphic you’d normally see before activation.

iPhone hacker AlJaMa wrote in with his how-to method for downgrading a 2.0 iPhone back to 1.1.4. According to AlJaMa, you can put your iPhone into restore mode, do a 1.1.4 restore (use option-Restore to pick the 1.1.4 ipsw package) and be no worse off than getting the Error 1015 we’ve all come to know and love. iLiberty or INdependence will kick you out of the 1015/recovery mode. The restored phone will continue to work as a phone despite the updated baseband.

AlJaMa warns that you may encounter error -2002. In such a case, he suggests you try restoring to other firmware versions until you get back to the 1015 error.

TypingWeb gains Safari compatiblity

The biggest barrier to effectively using your Mac (or your iPhone) isn’t processor speed or software compatibility — it’s poor typing speed. Who knew back at the invention of the manual typewriter that the QWERTY keyboard layout (alleged to have been designed to slow down typists and avoid jams) would still be our primary data interface more than a century later? Yes, we’ve got some other options now, but short of upgrading your RAM the best way to speed up your work is to simply learn to type.

To enhance that finger business, check out TypingWeb, which now offers a Safari-compatible (both for desktop and iPhone, as we originally noted here) and free set of typing drills. Using the service on my iPod touch, I discovered that my Blackberry-style two thumb technique was actually slowing me down compared to an index-finger approach that leveraged the word completion feature more effectively — who knew?

For a full-scale Mac typing tutor, the classic (not Classic — it runs in OS X now) choice is Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, available on a cross-platform CD.

T-Mobile offering iPhone for €99; catches apply
Geez, T-Mobile. Offering the iPhone for €99? That’s just verrückt (I’ve really been enjoying Babelfish recently, as you can probably tell). Anyway, if you’ve been waiting on buying an iPhone until the price went down a bit, perhaps you should consider a change of scenery. May I suggest Germany? Well,…
