When is 60 days not 60 days
Pursuant to yesterday’s post on Mr. Schlossberg’s rather blunt appraisal that the iPhone would be going 3G in sixty days, the noted tech journalist has now retracted his comment. Speaking with Silicon Alley Insider, Schlossy said that his estimate was based on the same sort of speculation that the rest…
iShield Mirror: For Obsessively Vain iPhone Owners Only
The iShield Mirror is, at its core, a two-piece hardshell protective case for the iPhone. However, the manufacturer takes it a step further by adding a film to the surface that functions as a mirror when the phone is not in use. When activated, the film is transparent enough and thin enough to allow for normal usage.
If you’re into hard cases for your phone, I suppose that adding a gimmick like this can prove useful for the ladies (and the kind of dudes that wear sweaters around their necks), but it seems a bit unhealthy to me. iPhone and Touch versions are available for for $29.99. O2’s iPhone sheds pounds
And in the UK today, much rejoicing. As predicted, mobile provider O2 announced that they will be dropping the price of the 8GB iPhone to £169 until June 1st—that’s £100 less than it originally retailed for when it was released in November of last year. The 16GB model, meanwhile, is…

Fring is the World’s First True iPhone VoIP App
Ignoring previous “iPhone VoIP” apps like Jah Jah, which are only VoIP after you connect to their analog to VoIP bridge, this Fring app seems to be the first real VoIP solution for the iPhone/iPod Touch. To get in on this action you need a jailbroken iPhone, Wi-FI access, and you’ll be able to call regular phones using either SkypeOut or SIP (your prices will be determined on which SIP provider you use and how much SkypeOut charges for your particular call). Best of all Fring has built-in IM capabilities for Skype, Google, ICQ, MSN, Twitter, AIM, and Yahoo contacts. The download and install are free. [Fring Install Instructions]
Mossberg Takes Back 3G iPhone in 60 Days Quote
The Walt Mossberg clip that made the rounds this weekend, proclaiming the 3G iPhone a mere 53 days away? He just backpedaled on it, swearing he has no better idea than we do. And if he did, he’d give himself scoop: “If I knew when this date was, why would I announce it in the middle of a sentence at the Finnish embassy, rather than report it in the Wall Street Journal?” Guess that chat with Steve straightened everything out, though is it really something he can take back? [Silicon Alley Insider]
Today Fring accounced their pre-release VoIP and IM client for any Apple iPhone that has been jailbroken. The client interfaces with multiple networks and allows the use of twitter, AOL, Skype, GoogleTalk, Yahoo, MSN and more.
Although I think domestic calls using VoIP over WiFi on the iPhone will be of limited use and more of a novelty, international use of this could be huge with the outrageous LD charges most wireless carriers charge.
Makes me think I should be doing the jailbreak on my Apple iPhone soon!
