Latest iPhone Firmware Saves Pictures from Safari

IMG_0001.PNGAt last! The latest beta version of Apple’s iPhone 1.2.0 firmware gives you the possibility of saving pictures straight from Safari and into the Photo Album. We tried and it works: just hold your finger against an image for a longer time than usual and the popup dialog will appear. The applications are many, like saving friends’ Facebook images, save loads of NSFW pics in Flickr, set iPhone backgrounds using those (or snatch our exclusive iPhone backgrounds), and perhaps the most obvious one: online porn collecting for offline porn watching. Native MobileTwitter for jailbroken iPhones

Many of have been waiting for a native iPhone twitter client for a long time. And while we wait for Craig Hockenberry’s efforts to bear fruit, presumably in June, it’s good to see MobileTwitter from Nicholas Pike which just recently showed up in the STE repository for Installer.app.

While there are definitely some rough edges, it basically works as advertised and seems superior to the Mobile Safari based options. Having the button bar at the bottom, however, seems less than ideal as it’s rather too easy to hit while typing an update. Nonetheless, MobileTwitter is worth checking out for the Twitter-obsessed, especially considering the improvements Nicholas has promised are coming.

MobileTwitter is a free download (though much more easily done from Installer) and naturally requires a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch.

Apple Virtual Operator Patent Opens Way to Free Carrier Selection

zapata_jobs3.jpgRemember the rumors about Apple becoming a Mobile Virtual Network Operator, which were constantly buzzing before the announcement of their exclusive deal with the Death Star? Well, the usual USPTO archeologists have discovered a patent showing their system to dynamically select carriers using an iTunes MVNO ID:

The patent was filed on October 2006, so clearly Apple was toying with the idea while they were negotiating with carriers. Does this mean they will go the MVNO way anytime soon? Given the support and conditions that the different carriers through the world are providing, I doubt it. But it definitely means that they have it in mind, perhaps as plan B.

Griffin ClearBoost iPhone Case Reviewed (Verdict: Who Do You Believe?)

Griffin’s new ClearBoost case promises protection and a cellular signal boost for the iPhone, but does it deliver on those promises? Well, that would depend on who you believe. iLounge claims that the signal boost works, but not under the weakest signal conditions. Crunchgear, on the other hand, called the signal booster “one of the greatest scams perpetrated on mankind since the Kennedy assassination.” Hmm…strong words. However, both agreed that the case itself was decent, so at least you have that for your $30. UPDATE: It appears that Crunchgear’s review was done using a hacked iPhone on T-Mobile, which would account for the problems. Griffin tells us the ClearBoost was made for AT&T’s network. German iPhone buyers get discounted 8GB handsets

Was is los in Deutschland heute? First the iTunes video store finally makes a German-language debut this week, and today we receive word via a T-Mobile press release that the first tiered-discount plan for iPhone purchases is now in effect. German buyers can take advantage of a limited-time offer (April 7 to June 30) to purchase an 8GB iPhone for as little as 99 euros, if they sign up for the top 2-year contract on a service plan (the Complete XL, 1000 minutes and 300 SMS for 89 euro a month) at buy time. Translated offer pages here and here. Lower-priced plans offer a comparatively lower discount, with the top price for an 8GB iPhone at 249 euros. Note that the 16 GB iPhone remains full freight at 499 euro.

Is this another example of the iPhone shortage phenomenon, or just some clever promotion by T-Mobile to enhance sales of the lower-end handset? Ach du meine Gute, ich bin völlig verwirrt.

Thanks Thorsten & c0caine

Let’s take a few minutes to chat with iPwnage developers Pytey, NerveGas and more to get a sense of the possibilities and promise of iPwnage.

If you’d like to replay the chat below, click the ‘replay’ button. Note that (ironically) the CoverItLive widget does not work on MobileSafari.

404: Firefox NOT Coming to iPhone, Sorry Kiddies
The folks at Mozilla are still fuming mad over Safari-gate. The developers behind the popular open source browser Firefox stated flatly that no efforts will be made to port Firefox to iPhone, blaming Apple’s Gestapo-like restrictive software license. So this means I can’t look forward to a browser that consumes half my memory and grinds […]
