DLO VentMount iPhone Car Holder is Practical, Convenient

Using a car’s AC vents to hold cellphones is an old idea. Using a car’s AC vent to hold an iPhone so you can watch movies/Cover Flow your way through your music is a new idea. DLO’s VentMount seems like an incredibly practical way to keep your iPhone/iPod Touch within short reach, especially in cars (like ours) that don’t have a convenient cupholder location to shove it into. It’s not mindblowing, but it’s $24.99 we’d gladly spend for usability’s sake. [DLO]

Gartner Declares iPhone Ready for Business, Promises More Obvious Predictions
Analysts are like Tarot card readers with MBAs, making speculative predictions based on little more than the direction of the wind and bird migration patterns. They follow a similar marketing practice too - the first reading is free, but the second will cost you, and cost you. The brain trust at Gartner Research, a firm […]

Microsoft Puts the Squeeze on Apple with Flash, Silverlight Support for Windows Mobile
Steve Jobs might want to look in his rearview mirror, because there’s a hulking eighteen-wheeler barreling down the highway, belching thick black smoke, and crushing every vehicle in its path. The software giant is working with long time rival Adobe to bring Flash player Lite (yes, THAT Flash player) to Windows Mobile devices, while simultaneously […]

Crazy Popular Asian Blogstar Prefers Fake Chinese iPhone to the Real Thing

This is either the best or worst iPhone review ever. Wendy Cheng is apparently the most popular blogger in Singapore. Before giving her the real iPhone, her producers tricked her into reviewing a Chinese knockoff. But she actually liked the fake, saying it’s “not bad for a shitass China phone.” The real iPhone? Only “mediocre,” and “I really don’t like the touchscreen…it’s fucking shitty.” Oh, that’s just the tip of this iceberg of awesome. [ClickNetwork.TV via Fake Steve]

Is this the iPhone 3G chip?

Engadget posted about some information they received from the ZiPhone folks. According to ZiPhone, they have spotted some code in the new iPhone 2.0 beta software that suggests Apple will use the Infineon 3G chipset. The code mentions “SGOLD3,” which is a series of chips that Infineon produces. iPhone currently uses the S-GOLD2 EDGE chipset.

S-GOLD3H, also known as “PMB8878,” supports 7.2Mbps HSDPA and has built-in acceleration and media playback features (which, incidentally, the iPhone already has and does well). This chip also includes a higher resolution camera, 5 mega-pixels instead of a 2. Engadget notes that the processor speed stays the same.

The iPhone Is Killing the Internet!

deathpod2.jpgThe internet’s an exciting, lively place, full of innovation and wonder, right? Wrong. It’s dying. The cancer that’s slowly killing our internets: the iPhone and Xbox. While it sounds like some fool’s jibba-jabba, it must be true, because an Oxford professor with degrees from Harvard and Yale says so.

Basically, Jonathan Zittrain argues that the wild, woolly nature of the web, with viruses, identify theft, Rickrolling, etc., are frightening for people like your mom, who want a neatly tied-up-in-a-bow kind of experience, even if that extra security means less freedom. (Current event analogy alert!) So, he sees people moving to “tethered appliances” controlled by dictatorial manufacturers, like the iPhone or Xbox, rather than good ol’ open PCs. End result, says the prof is the death of innovation and the internet as we know it.

Of course, this ignores the explosion of open source, which is basically everywhere now. And more and more infamously tight-assed companies are claiming or trying to prove how open they are: Verizon, Microsoft and Comcast, just to name some of the biggies. If anything, it looks like we’re moving toward more openness—and hey, don’t forget that iPhone SDK, doc. [PC World]
