Last second notice: iPhoneDevCamp New York City

Filed under: iPod Family, Developer, iPhone

What do Matzoh, Gefilte Fish, and ad hoc iPhone development camps have in common? They’re all scheduled for tomorrow. As the sun sets and Jews around the world begin to celebrate Passover, the festival of freedom from slavery, pale iPhone developers will be crawling back to their rocks after joining together at Polytechnic University for a free iPhone development event.

The event runs from 10AM to 6PM at the Brooklyn Campus at 6 Metrotech Center, Brooklyn 11201. Bagels and/or pizza will be served. Note that you cannot just show up at the event without notifying organizers via the website — security has a list of attendees.

3G iPhone’s Upcoming Chip Found?

The iPhone SDK Beta 3 has barely been out for a few hours and Zibri, maker of the ZiPhone iPhone tool, has found references to a future 3G chip inside the new firmware. The chipset is the SGOLD3, which follows up the current S-GOLD2 in today’s iPhone. Here’s what the S-GOLD3 has support for, not all of which will make it into the next-gen iPhone: HSDPA category 8 (7.2 Mbps), cameras of up to 5-megapixels, MPEG4/H.263 hardware acceleration and “video telephony, streaming, recording and playback.” Again, Apple might not enable all these features in the actual 3G iPhone, but at least we know that they’re theoretically possible. Quake 3 Arena Ported to iPhone; Let the Networked Games Commence

Holy butt-clencher, Batman! Quake 3 Arena has somehow found itself ported to the iPhone. Details are thinner than my scalp is on hair, but the video clearly shows a networked game going on in full swing. You may be thinking this sounds semi-neat, but let me tell you this; the game uses the freaking accelerometer for direction control, while shooting is done simply by tapping on the touchscreen. Now, I’m off to collapse in a euphoric pile, you check out the video and then do the same. There’s no word on the release yet, but hopefully it will show up somewhere once I am out of my aforementioned, euphoric pile state. We’ll keep you posted. [Crunchgear]

Apple files for iPhone instant messaging patent

Filed under: Internet Tools, Apple, iPhone

The one feature that most of us iPhone owners want is native instant messaging. With the upcoming SDK release, instant messaging apps will most likely not be able to run in the background (in other words, they may not receive messages when the phone is sleeping or doing other things). However, AppleInsider is reporting on an Apple patent for instant messaging on the iPhone that was filed in August of last year, but just granted in March of this year.

The drawing included with the patent filing looks identical to the SMS application on the iPhone, with some key differences, one of which is word suggestions that appear as bubbles above the keyboard. AppleInsider also reports that this service could be used as a substitute for MMS (multi media messaging) which the current iPhone is lacking.

You can read the full patent filing on the USPTO’s website.

Thanks, James!

Gartner Declares iPhone Ready for Business, Promises More Obvious Predictions
Analysts are like Tarot card readers with MBAs, making speculative predictions based on little more than the direction of the wind and bird migration patterns. They follow a similar marketing practice too - the first reading is free, but the second will cost you, and cost you. The brain trust at Gartner Research, a firm […]

Native MobileTwitter for jailbroken iPhones

Many of have been waiting for a native iPhone twitter client for a long time. And while we wait for Craig Hockenberry’s efforts to bear fruit, presumably in June, it’s good to see MobileTwitter from Nicholas Pike which just recently showed up in the STE repository for Installer.app.

While there are definitely some rough edges, it basically works as advertised and seems superior to the Mobile Safari based options. Having the button bar at the bottom, however, seems less than ideal as it’s rather too easy to hit while typing an update. Nonetheless, MobileTwitter is worth checking out for the Twitter-obsessed, especially considering the improvements Nicholas has promised are coming.

MobileTwitter is a free download (though much more easily done from Installer) and naturally requires a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch.
