Juice Packs no longer just for kids
If you’re a road warrior who relies on having a phone/email device on you at all times, then you know there’s nothing worse than a dead battery, especially on the iPhone, where you can’t swap it out for a fresh one. There have been plenty of top-up solutions that use…
Asian Blogstar Flames Back Apple, iPhone Fanboys
I have to confess that I still can’t get Xiaxue—the amazingly popular Asian blogstar who slammed the iPhone in favor of a Chinese knock-off earlier this month. At first I told Matt that I thought she was a completely dumbtastic bozo but, after seeing this, I think she may be the biggest toe-curling comedy genius since Ricky Gervais. There’s something awkwardly funny about her reply to the Apple fanboys’ flaming that made me laugh out loud. Wait until the end of the video and everything will make sense. Kind of. What do you think? Stupid moron or comedy genius? (Update: I just saw the previous episode on her series, a NSFW six-minute visit to a sex shop, including her take on toys and penis extender systems. She’s definitely funny.)
No wonder she made our top 10 list of hot bloggers in 2006. [Clicknetwork via Fashion Funky—thanks Yash]

TiVo Remote Control Over IP via Telnet
When TiVo worked with Crestron (the home automation company) to provide integration between your DVR and your wall control panels, they actually opened up a door for people to control your TV with just about any computer. All you have to do is telnet into your TiVo via port 31339 and type in some commands. It’s pretty basic now, but the telnet interface means you can easily rig up an iPhone remote app or do some kind of port forwarding to remotely control your TV from outside your home. Why you would want to do that is your business, since we don’t want to tell you how to best spend your time. The complete command list after the jump. Type IRCODE in caps, followed by any of these commands.

404: Firefox NOT Coming to iPhone, Sorry Kiddies
The folks at Mozilla are still fuming mad over Safari-gate. The developers behind the popular open source browser Firefox stated flatly that no efforts will be made to port Firefox to iPhone, blaming Apple’s Gestapo-like restrictive software license. So this means I can’t look forward to a browser that consumes half my memory and grinds […]
Fruit Wars: RIM and Apple to Go Head to Head in Corporate Messaging
Apple and RIM are on a collision course as the two companies go toe to toe vying for enterprise messaging market share. RIM has long held the corporate high ground with its dominant BlackBerry Enterprise Server technology and ubiquitous handsets. But Apple is sending iPhone to business school, adopting Microsoft Exchange support that is certain […]
Flash Wars: Adobe in the History and Future of Flash [Part 1 of 3]
Pitted against Microsoft’s efforts to crush Flash using its own copycat Silverlight platform, open source projects seeking to duplicate Flash for free, and Apple’s efforts to create a mobile platform wholly free of any trace of Flash, Adobe has scram…
Apple to begin selling 3G iPhone in late June?

We at TUAW HQ definitely have an obsession with Twitter. We use Twitterrific for the Mac, and Hahlo for iPhone. Hahlo provides great features in a beautiful, usable user interface. A couple weeks ago we got a sneak peek at the beta of Hahlo 3 (titled “the Legendary Edition”), but now you can try it out for yourself. That’s because Hahlo 3 was released to the public today. In addition to a completely revamped UI, the new version integrates full searching capabilities via Summize.
To try out Hahlo 3 for yourself, just point Mobile Safari over to http://hahlo.com. It’s free and easy to use. If you don’t have an iPod touch or iPhone, you can get to Hahlo from any standards-compliant modern browser (Safari 3, Firefox, etc.).

Department of Defense Unhappy With Apple Chip Company Purchase
P.A. Semi, the chip design company Apple picked up for a song, is best known for its super-efficient PWRficient processor, a PowerPC variant. One of the big customers for the CPU is the Department of Defense, which makes use of it in programs in every major branch of the military, and they’re not thrilled by the possibility of Apple ending production of the chips.
Ten defense systems, to the tune of $100 million in products over the next four years, use P.A. Semi’s PWRficient processor. On Monday, P.A. Semi told its customers they were being acquired and couldn’t guarantee chip supplies anymore. (Brings us back to the problem of obsolete tech in the military.)
It’s possible the licensing issues could get worked out to maintain supply “on an end-of-life basis” but in that same statement, P.A. noted that their buyer (Apple) wasn’t interested in their products or roadmap, just their IP and engineering skills. Which means Apple has no interest in anything their currently making or about to make, despite Blam’s reasonable assumption that was the case. So it’s all about their design chops, or they really are just a bargaining chip. [EETimes via GigaOM]
iPhone is most popular camera phone on Flickr
Filed under: iPhone
I’m often impressed by the photos I get out of my little iPhone. It’s not a pro-level DSLR for sure, but for quick, off-the-cuff snapshots, it does a very good job.
I’m not alone in my belief. Computerworld’s analysis of current Flickr Data shows that the iPhone is their most popular camera phone. Part of that is the novelty of the iPhone, undoubtedly. Owners continue to relish any excuse to whip them out.
The other is ease of posting a photo to Flickr. Once you’ve added your special Flickr email address to your contact list, sharing a photo is a snap. Tap it once, tap “Email photo,” enter the first few letters of your Flickr email address and hit Send. Done.
While we’re on the subject, I’ll offer my tip for taking decent iPhone photos. Unlike nearly every other camera ever made, the iPhone exposes an image when the “shutter button” is released, not depressed. With that in mind, here’s the three step process I follow
- Press and hold the “shutter button”
- Compose the shot
- Release
The tendency is to compose the shot and then tap the button, often resulting in blur. Try this method and watch the results.
