SingTel confirms iPhone for Singapore, India, the Philippines and Australia
Filed under: iPhone
In a singularly uninformative press release, SingTel, Singapore’s largest telecommunications company, has announced that it is bringing the iPhone to “Singapore, India, the Philippines and Australia later this year” through several subsidiary carrier brands: SingTel, Bharti Airtel, Globe and Optus.
The latter confirms our earlier post that Aussies won’t be limited to Vodafone for their iPhone needs. Unfortunately no dates or pricing have been announced; it seems safe to assume this will cover the forthcoming 3G iPhone. In any case, this is good news for some of our Asia / Pacific iPhone brethren.
Thanks Peter!

Details on iPhones in Latin America
All indications point to a large, international distribution of the iPhone that’s just waiting for to launch. Earlier in the week, Vodafone announced their intention to carry the iPhone in ten countries, and The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Vodafone, Telstra and Optus will carry the iPhone in Australia.
Today, Reuters is reporting that America Movil will carry the iPhone across Latin America. They’re in 16 Latin American countries, plus the Caribbean and the United States. As of March 2008, America Movil held more than 159 million mobile subscribers.
Of course, they were tight-lipped about the details of the arrangement, like exclusivity or plan specifics. We’ll see soon enough.
Thanks, Rodrigo!

New iPhone Firmware Beta Has a 3G On/Off Switch: I Wish It Was Automatic
The iPhone’s recently released firmware 2.0 Beta 5 has a 3G on off switch for users. Underneath, there’s a warning that 3G browsing will kill your battery faster. While that’s more proof of the upgraded hardware we already expect, what I find most interesting is the manual control. It’s not too late to change it, but I was hoping that Apple would approach the 3G/2G power consumption and speed tradeoffs by having an automatic toggle for 2G and 3G:
It could have a smart mode that would turn 3G off to save battery for background email downloading, weather checking and standby; and then turn it on for YouTube, maps, web browsing and iTunes music store downloading. Wouldn’t that make a lot of sense? P.S. Apple, you can have this idea for free in trade for some copy and paste action in the next beta. [Chronic Dev via Apple Insider]
