AT&T Says Free Wi-Fi for iPhones Will Come… Someday

attiphoneno.jpgAll AT&T’s flip-flopping between offering free wireless at Starbucks and then taking it away—turns out it was some peon screwing up after all. An spokesperson for the company told the New York Times that the confusion was due to a “human error.” But the day when iPhone users can definitively access the internet while sipping on frappuccinos will come, the PR flack assures, AT&T is just refusing to say when. Oh, come off it, AT&T. The cat’s out of the bag already, you might as well roll out the service now. I’m sure there will be plenty of secrets you can accidentally release before deadline in the future. [New York Times]

“iPhone Black” appears on AT&T ordering site

Apple Insider reports that AT&T customers can now choose Apple iPhone Black. This option appears on the AT&T page for upgrading or replacing phones. It reinforces the black-shell rumor that our big sister blog Engadget has been covering. Conventional wisdom still says “June” for the next-gen iPhone release. Might it be “May” instead?

NBC Streaming Full Episodes of 30 Rock and the Office to iPhones (for Free, No Ads!)

Even though there’s no love lost between NBC and iTunes, that doesn’t mean NBC doesn’t love you! At least if you’ve got an iPhone or iPod touch. They’re streaming full episodes of 30 Rock and The Office to iPhones (and touches) in QuickTime, for free, with NO ads. They work, nicely, but the major catch is that if you exit Safari, you’ve gotta re-DL all over again, and the files are huge, so is this Wi-Fi only, really. This looks weird for NBC, but it’s really not.

They’re putting their shows out online in a million different ways (you can even download 30 Rock, The Office, Conan and Leno direct to your desktop now) and more than happy to pipe ‘em to you, as long as it’s in a controlled sandbox of some sort. NBC Direct requires a walled-garden player install with loads of DRM, and they wanted copyright controls from Apple and Microsoft to give just two examples, not to mention Hulu. It’s sorta surprising that the QuickTime feed for iPhone is unprotected, but theoretically it’s restricted to two devices. You know, if they’d just relax a bit, overall, they’d be in a good place online. [Silicon Alley Insider, Thanks Peter!]

AT&T: free iPhone wifi is coming at some point

AT&T has been teasing us with free iPhone wifi. First it was on then it was off, and AT&T didn’t seem to be saying anything. Well the New York Times finally got somebody to say something official and apparently the launch of the service was “human error” but AT&T “has long planned to offer free Wi-Fi to customers with iPhones and other phones that have Wi-Fi capability” as a “way of differentiating the AT&T network and giving customers another reason to choose us over a competitor.”

The upshot: free iPhone (and other smartphone) wifi is coming from AT&T, but they’re not saying when. My guess is that they may roll it out to coincide with the launch of the 3G iPhone.

Rumor: AT&T Says No Employee Vacations Between June 15 and July 12 For the 3G iPhone

According to cellpassion, AT&T’s pulling a similar move as Apple did last year, disallowing any employee vacations for a period from June 15 to July 12. If this is true, there’s only one reason why AT&T would do this: the 3G iPhone. Why did they pick June 15 when the keynote for WWDC is June 9? Beats me. It seems more and more likely that the phone is coming, however, so don’t buy anything until after June unless you want to be a sad sack. [Cellpassion]

AT&T Limiting iPhones to ONE Per Customer, No Cash or Checks

AT&T just sent out an internal memo to its employees today limiting all iPhone purchases to one per customer—down from a previous three—and making everyone pay with credit cards or debit cards. Do they want to make their stock last until the 3G iPhone is out? Probably, since people who buy more than one are usually not regular guys who just wants to use the phone for themselves. Jobs WWDC keynote all but confirmed

While there still hasn’t been an official announcement from Apple (as of this writing), Fortune has reported that Steve Jobs will don the black shirt and blue jeans to deliver a keynote address on June 9, kicking off WWDC ‘08.

It’s not a surprise, of course, as Steve typically talks during the show. Also expected is the announcement of a 3G iPhone, as well as plans for international distribution, as rumors have been at their usual pre-event levels for a couple of weeks.

If you can’t wait for all of the fun to begin, download the Countdown to WWDC Dashboard widget and stare at it obsessively.

Native Orb App Brings Live TV to Your iPhone

The OrbLive streaming media app is for everyone who is sick of waiting for a Sling Mobile client on their iPhone. As you may (or may not) know, Orb pulls files off your PC and streams them to any device with an app or web browser capable of accessing the Orb interface. From there you can stream music, video files, and if you have a TV tuner card, live TV. While Orb was previously accessible via Safari, this new, official app is supposed to be an easier, more intuitive way to get your media on the go. It does require a jailbroken iPhone, however. Check out the video of the client in action. [Orb via Register Hardware]
