Sync your iPhone’s music library in Linux, the wireless way

Linux users are a bit left out in the cold when it comes to the iPhone, but if you’re a Linux user who wants to sync your music library with your iPhone, Lifehacker’s got a tutorial on how to do just that. Video syncing seems to work as well, but images are apparently a little idiosyncratic.
You’ll have to jailbreak your iPhone using ZiPhone, and the actual steps involved seem fairly involved…but hey, if you’re a Linux user, you’re probably cool with both fairly involved technical tweaking and voiding warranties.

TUAW preview: Schmap for iPhone & iPod Touch
Planning some activities out on the town this weekend, or searching for a Mother’s Day dining option? The fine folks at Schmap have a treat for you — they’d like TUAW readers to have the first whack at their new iPhone City Guides and Local Search before the Mobile Safari-optimized site goes into official beta on Monday, May 12.
Point Safari on your iPhone or iPod Touch to www.schmap.com, then enter the pre-launch preview access code: 724627. Once you’re in the site, pull up a Schmap Guide for your favorite city for info, maps, and more. Some of the search features aren’t wired in yet, but they should be done soon.

Atom-powered Mini-tablet Confirmed By Intel Germany CEO?

Was it a slip of the tongue? ZDNet.de reports that Intel Germany CEO Hannes Schwaderer, speaking at an Intel 40th anniversary event at Munich’s BMW World, confirmed that there is an iPhone that will be using Intel’s new Atom processor. The new device is “slightly larger” than the current iPhone, raising speculation that this new member of the iPhone family may be the long-rumored Apple mini-tablet with a 720 x 480 display.
Schwaderer also mentioned that an upgraded version of the current iPhone with the same form factor would be a 3G model. With iPhones out of stock in the US and UK, and Steve Jobs scheduled to give the keynote at WWDC 08, new iPhones and the mini-tablet might be right around the corner.

AT&T Changes its Mind Again, No Hotspot Access for iPhone Users
AT&T has flip-flopped yet again on the issue of iPhone customers getting free access to AT&T hotspots. While yesterday the iPhone plans page clearly stated that access to the hotspots was included with all plans, that statement is now gone again. John Mayer Cheats On Apple With Blackberry Bold
Jes s has been doing a rash of John Mayer / Apple stories lately, for I don’t really know what reason, but you guys seem to care about it a lot more than I do. Here’s another: a Blackberry Bold, which is an interesting sign in terms of taste making and trendsetting by the guy who usually chooses all things Apple.
John’s close to Cupertino, gets things like the Macbook Air early and has played the closing music at a keynote. So I wonder what they think about his latest blog post and I wonder if this is a good sign for the Bold. (Blackberry has more or less banned all blogs from their media plans, so I still haven’t had enough exposure to tell you what I think, but maybe John will write a song or something in his next album.) Xtand Makes iPhone Into Very Small, Underpowered iMac
The Xtand is a solid aluminum stand that not only holds your iPhone when your hands have better things to do, but does so in that “I’m an aluminum stand that looks like an iMac stand” kind of way. It’s 100% fanboy gear, but we have to admit, the 360-degree rotation and cable management system (aka hole in the back) actually look kind of convenient. No word on price at this time. If only Jeff Foxworthy’s career were alive right now, we could end this post with a decent “you might be an Apple fanboy if…” joke. Our condolences to his family. [JustMobile via MobilitySite]

AT&T Slips iPhone Black Reference in Customer Pages
Something called the “iPhone Black” is now appearing in the “Select Model” popup menu on AT&T’s registered customers screen. An AT&T spokesperson has told us that the company doesn’t have any comment on this. And we don’t know what “iPhone Black” means, but some may take this as a confirmation of the rumored all-black iPhone allegedly coming next month. However, since there’s no other information except this screenshot, we will take it as is. [AppleInsider]

Italy’s iPhone to Have Two Carriers: The End of Exclusivity?
Following Vodafone’s announcement that it would be bringing the iPhone to ten more countries, including Italy, Telecom Italia issued its own short and sweet press release: “Telecom Italia announced today it has signed a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Italy later this year.” So that’s two separate companies laying claim to the Italian release of the iPhone, which sounds like the end of Apple’s exclusivity deal to us. There are even rumors that a third Italian carrier is thinking about it: “evaluating the market opportunity,” as Wind’s website puts it. Dare we hope that this news also implies unlocked iPhones?
