iPhone World Map Charts Jobs’ Giant Game Of Risk

It’s tough to keep track of the iPhone’s slow global release, so one Apple fan assembled all the data into one easy to read map. If the country is red, then they either have the iPhone or will be getting it this summer. (Note: Switzerland, Spain and Poland are still just rumored, not official).

It’s like one of those pandemic maps from the movies. You see the military general plotting two little red dots. Then four. Then eight. And then, all of the sudden, the dots have covered the general’s body, spewing puss across the room in all directions. [Apple 2.0]

iPhone Wins D&AD Black Pencil Design Award
The D&AD Black Pencil, an award so prestigious they would rather not give it away at all than give it to just any flashy objet-de-ans, is now joining what must be a mantle-straining load down at Apple Design VP Jonathan Ive’s house. Steve Jobs, Ive, and their iPhone, which has already been cleaning up on the […]

Lextech App Turns Your iPhone into a Surveillance Device

A company called Lextech has created an application that lets you control surveillance devices via your iPhone. As well as watching the action on the phone, the app also lets you control the cameras via its touchscreen. See the system in action in a couple of videos after the jump.

I guess this means no more security guards numbing their arses as they sit, bored, behind banks of monitors. [Lextech via Nowhere Else 2.0]

Another iPhone in the 3G wall: AT&T limits purchasers to one phone

While the Inuit people of Alaska and Canada probably don’t have more than a dozen words for snow (rather than the hundreds attributed to their language), it seems to me that we’re well into the century mark for different ways of saying “the iPhone 3G is right around the corner.” Today’s example of iPhonius FirstGenerationic Obsoletum comes from Boy Genius Report, which reprints an urgent email to AT&T Retail staffers: no more than 1 iPhone per customer, please.

If availability constraints around the globe, the reappearance of refurb devices and the steady drumbeat of rumors wasn’t enough for you, well, here you go. Those who were planning to pick up a bushelful of iPhones at firesale prices will now have to go in disguise.

What are you playin’ at, AT&T? Some tipsters pointed out to Engadget that the My Account page on AT&T Wireless’s site now provides you with two options after you select Apple as your phone manufacturer: the run-of-the-mill, ordinary, “iPhone” and the mysterious “iPhone Black.” Cue the suspenseful music. I snapped…

iPhone Dev Camp 2

Filed under: iPod Family, Developer, iPhone

iPhoneDevCamp 2

If you lost out on the chance to attend WWDC 2008 and your development focus is the iPhone, you’re in luck. iPhoneDevCamp 2 is scheduled for August 1 - 3, 2008 at the Adobe offices in San Francisco. A follow-up to the first iPhoneDevCamp held in early July of 2007, iPhoneDevCamp 2 is a non-profit event dedicated solely to development of applications for iPhone and iPod Touch using the native SDK and web standards.

As an attendee, you’ll work with other developers to create new iPhone/iPod Touch apps, learn how to migrate Mac apps to the Apple handheld platform, and find out how to test and optimize your apps. If you’re a Cocoa Touch developer, web developer, UI designer, or tester, this is the place to be the first weekend of August. The registration links aren’t yet up and running, but be sure to bookmark the iPhoneDevCamp 2 site for future reference.

A big TUAW thank you to Raven for the tip!

The flip floppery AT&T iPhone Wi-Fi access has finally been made official, with AT&T adding a note on their own iPhone plan page that reflects the free Wi-Fi. That’s 17,000 Wi-Fi hotspots, some of which are at Starbucks, some of which are at a Barnes and Noble. Finally, now with wireless access, you’ve got something to read at Barnes and Noble. [AT&T]

Celebrities and their Apple goodies

Filed under: Humor, Odds and ends, iPhone

Recently, several of you tipped us on this video of US Senator Barak Obama quickly checking something on his iPhone (it happens around the 1:00 mark). It got us thinking of our favorite celebrity Apple product sightings.

  • Back in July of 2006, it was reported that Pope Benedict XVI had received an iPod nano from employees of Vatican Radio. The phrase “To His Holiness, Benedict XVI” was engraved on the back.
  • Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II purchased an iPod mini back in July of ‘05.
  • U.S. Presidential adviser Karl Rove was seen using his iPhone in August of last year.
  • Actress, singer and all-around role model Lindsay Lohan whipped out her iPhone shortly after they were first released in the U.S.

So welcome to the club, Senator! You’re in good company. We think.
