iPhone Stocks Being Replenished, Not Sold Out, Say UK Retailers

Despite the rumors of iPhones being out of stock in the UK, it’s not really true—according to the retailers themselves. Reghardware has spoken to both O2 and Carphone Warehouse, and both say they’re just tackling getting more 16GB iPhones for their online departments. Apple themselves have stock and O2 and Carphone Warehouse have iPhones available in their high street stores. Does this info mean they won’t be getting any more 8GB versions, though? Well, we can speculate that, but we don’t know. It also leaves us wondering what this news does to the iPhone 2.0 rumors. [Reghardware]

iPhone / iPod TiVoRemote App Makes Telnet Control Easy

Remember when we showed you an iPhone controlling a TiVo over IP by means of Telnet? Well, over at the TiVo Community Forum, a user named Duckfin has compiled a “quick and dirty little program” that gives the iPhone and iPod touch a proper TiVo Remote. The app which is named TiVoRemote, no surprise there, actually makes practical use of TiVo’s Telnet control feature. But as with most apps these days it does require a jailbroken iPhone / iPod. For installation and info hit the jump.

Installation is pretty simple and allows for TiVoRemote to be installed via Installer.app, once a new source is added. After launching the program and entering the settings menu, all that’s required is the TiVo’s IP address. Once entered, your iPhone / iPod is ready to control your Series 3 or HD TiVo. As you can see from the video above and picture below, the key layout is pretty basic. But I am sure it’s only a matter of time till it gets spruced up, allowing the TiVo guy to be on the iPhone / iPod. From complete instructions hit the TiVoRemote link for the Google Code page. When should you buy an iPhone?

Filed under: iPod Family, Retail, iPhone

As iPhone channels continue to run dry, more and more readers have asked whether now would be a good time to buy an iPhone or not — assuming you could even find one. Our Mike Rose suggested that dry channels might indicate that Apple is trying to avoid that whole “if a new model appears within 15 days of purchase” nightmare. If he’s right, expect to see a flood of refurb units hit Apple and AT&T just after the new 3G unit is introduced.

The first generation iPhone is an absolutely fabulous device and there’s nothing to indicate that it won’t be 100% compatible with new firmware for a long time to come. Price cuts on previous generation units make them an especially good match to hacking and unlocking. You can be enjoying your new iPhone while waiting out the inevitable 3G price drop or the move to newer generation technology.

With Apple, there’s a distinct consumer advantage to buying about 6-months behind the trend. As a delayed adopter, you buy all the beauty of the new technology while getting that (plus all the software updates and fixes) at a slightly lower price.

Celebrities and their Apple goodies

Filed under: Humor, Odds and ends, iPhone

Recently, several of you tipped us on this video of US Senator Barak Obama quickly checking something on his iPhone (it happens around the 1:00 mark). It got us thinking of our favorite celebrity Apple product sightings.

  • Back in July of 2006, it was reported that Pope Benedict XVI had received an iPod nano from employees of Vatican Radio. The phrase “To His Holiness, Benedict XVI” was engraved on the back.
  • Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II purchased an iPod mini back in July of ‘05.
  • U.S. Presidential adviser Karl Rove was seen using his iPhone in August of last year.
  • Actress, singer and all-around role model Lindsay Lohan whipped out her iPhone shortly after they were first released in the U.S.

So welcome to the club, Senator! You’re in good company. We think.

Raging Thunder iPhone Racing Game Shows Tons of Potential

If you needed some indication as to how much power the iPhone had for games, this Raging Thunder demo should make you giddy for what’s to come. Not only does the game use the accelerometer, which acts as a more-than-adequate wheel, everything’s rendered in pretty decent OpenGL 3D graphics as well. It’s no GTA4, but you can download it from Installer.app now. If Zune can do multiplayer Wi-Fi games, the iPhone should too. And maybe, just maybe, multiplayer games over the internet? AT&T Flip Flops on One iPhone Policy

triple.jpgI’ve come to the conclusion that AT&T just loves toying with us when it comes to the iPhone. Just days after limiting buyers to a single iPhone, it’s back to the old threefer rule—apparently they found enough iPhones lying around in a closet somewhere to go back to biz as usual. AT&T Slips iPhone Black Reference in Customer Pages

Something called the “iPhone Black” is now appearing in the “Select Model” popup menu on AT&T’s registered customers screen. An AT&T spokesperson has told us that the company doesn’t have any comment on this. And we don’t know what “iPhone Black” means, but some may take this as a confirmation of the rumored all-black iPhone allegedly coming next month. However, since there’s no other information except this screenshot, we will take it as is. [AppleInsider]

Update: AT&T’s just denied the existence of an iPhone Black, pointing to leftover placeholder text from a weekend update.

Intel Germany CEO Spills on Atom-Based Mini-Tablet iPhone

fakeiphonebig.jpgThrough the fabulously true-to-life magic of machine translation comes word from ZDNet.de that Intel Germany CEO Hannes Schwaderer has confirmed an upcoming, larger (more tablet-y?) “version of the iPhone” based on Intel’s Atom platform. Supposedly, the beefier unit size isn’t due to the Atom chipset, but to the previously rumored bigger 720×480 display.

This adds to past rumors of a mystery Apple device making use of Atom, though Schwaderer’s supposed semantic choice calling it a “version of the iPhone” seems odd, given that Atom is designed more for UMPCs than traditional mobile devices. Also, too much bigger and it’s not much of a phone-sized gadget anymore—more like a mini-tablet or as Jesus has called this particular phantasm, the Son of Newton. As always, we’ll believe it when see it. [ZDNet.de via MacRumors]

Google’s Vic Gundotra on the iPhone
I’ve got a story over at the Mothership about Google’s iPhone plans, in which Vic Gundotra, the company’s vice president of engineering, talks about Google’s commitment to producing native apps for the iPhone. (It’s part of a larger profile of Google’s Mac development efforts that I wrote, just in case…
