T-Mobile to retain iPhone exclusivity in Germany

At the Reuters Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit in Paris today, T-Mobile CEO Hamid Akhavan said he expected to continue being the exclusive iPhone provider in Germany, citing the company’s strong relationship with Apple.

He also noted that “if and when” there is a 3G iPhone, T-Mobile anticipates selling it exclusively in Germany as well. Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile’s parent company) will sell the iPhone in Austria, but Orange will carry the iPhone in Germany’s southern neighbor as well.

AT&T stores are rationing iPhones
If, in light of the current iPhone shortage, you were planning on raiding AT&T stores to stock up on iPhones and resell them at high prices, you might be a little disappointed to find that the mobile operator’s retail locations are now limiting the number of iPhones that customers can…

iPhone World Map Charts Jobs’ Giant Game Of Risk

It’s tough to keep track of the iPhone’s slow global release, so one Apple fan assembled all the data into one easy to read map. If the country is red, then they either have the iPhone or will be getting it this summer. (Note: Switzerland, Spain and Poland are still just rumored, not official).

It’s like one of those pandemic maps from the movies. You see the military general plotting two little red dots. Then four. Then eight. And then, all of the sudden, the dots have covered the general’s body, spewing puss across the room in all directions. [Apple 2.0]

iSepta gives iPhone users Philly transit insight

iSepta, a new iPhone friendly site, has a limited audience, but to that audience (of which I am a member) it’s a game changer. As I’ve mentioned once or twice here on TUAW, I’m a proud Philadelphia resident. As such I find myself using public transportation fairly frequently, which means I am forced to use SEPTA’s website (that’s the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, to you).

SEPTA
runs, amongst other things, the Regional Rail, which connects Philadelphia to its suburbs with a series of train lines. iSepta lets you plan your trip from the comfort of your iPhone without having to visit the official SEPTA site, which is decidedly mobile-device unfriendly.

Starting a new trip with iSepta couldn’t be easier: Click the ‘New Trip’ button, enter your starting station, then select your destination station.
That’s it. You’re then presented with the next 5 trains that meet your criteria, as well as an option to view the weekday and weekend schedules. iSepta is even clever enough to simply swap your starting point and destination so you can quickly find out what time you need to be at the station to get back.

You can also text iSepta with your starting point and end point and it will text you back with the next 3 trains.

At the moment iSepta only offers up schedules for the Regional Rail, so users of Philadelphia’s various other forms of public transportation are out of luck. The site also lacks SEPTA’s up to the minute status about cancelled trains and late arrivals, but the developers are working on adding that.

If it seems like I’m gushing here, that’s because I am. iSepta is such a vast improvement over SEPTA’s website that I’ll be using to get all the info I need about the Regional Rail schedule whether I’m on my iPhone or at my Mac.

iPhone Windows Vista Skin Makes Steve Jobs Cry Tears of Blood

vistaiphone.jpg Best, worst or most hilarious iPhone skin ever? VistaPerfection 2.0 is a complete Windows Vista skin for the iPhone with over 90 icons, wallpapers, a dock, sound effects and everything else Vista like the Sidebar and Start menu. I’m not sure why anyone would do this to their iPhone, but be warned, since it’s not on Installer yet (soon), the process ain’t exactly painless, requiring Jailbreak, SSH access and SummerBoard. Full instructions at the link—send us pictures if you’re ballsy enough to do this. It’s not so we can laugh at you, honest.[Modmyifone via Just Another iPhone Blog via Technabob]

iPhone “Currently Unavailable” Online: Brilliant Pre 3G iPhone Strategy?

The iPhone is “currently unavailable” at the AppleStore US, following the dry-out in the UK. Does this mean they are waiting for the shipment of the next version? If so, this is a brilliant and rare move for Apple.

We won’t know for sure until next month, but knowing Apple’s tight command of their stock levels, it looks like this may be the reason. But considering we’re almost exactly 30 days from the WWDC keynote, it could mean the 3G iphone is coming sooner than we think. Let’s assume this is what is happening. If so, this move is brilliantly kind and uncharacteristic of Apple. What they’re doing is trading off secrecy to protect people from buying the first-gen iPhone in its last days before its successor is unveiled. I mean, if you’d bought an iPhone and it was upgraded to v.2 days after your purchase, wouldn’t you be pissed? Maybe they’d rather short the sales for a month and not have to deal with thousands of pissed off customers. [Apple Store–thanks, Erik]

T-Mobile Germany and Apple so happy together
So, with all of this hubbub over Apple’s non-exclusive carrier deals in many of the countries they’re moving into, what does this mean for the countries where Apple’s already got deals in place? According to the CEO of T-Mobile, Hamid Akhavan, it doesn’t affect the happy marriage between Apple and…

AT&T Slips iPhone Black Reference in Customer Pages

Something called the “iPhone Black” is now appearing in the “Select Model” popup menu on AT&T’s registered customers screen. An AT&T spokesperson has told us that the company doesn’t have any comment on this. And we don’t know what “iPhone Black” means, but some may take this as a confirmation of the rumored all-black iPhone allegedly coming next month. However, since there’s no other information except this screenshot, we will take it as is. [AppleInsider]

Update: AT&T’s just denied the existence of an iPhone Black, pointing to leftover placeholder text from a weekend update.

Apple’s Top Designer Explains Design

Most of you probably know Jonathan Ive even if you don’t recognize the name—he’s Apple’s head of design (otherwise known as the comapny’s Senior Vice President of Industrial Design). And he’s chiefly credited for designs of the iMac, iPod and iPhone. In an interview with The Independent, he shared some of his philosophies on designing for Apple, and just how Apple “does it.”

We have a very clear focus that all the development teams at Apple share, a focus around trying to make really great products. That can sound ridiculously simplistic, almost naive, but it’s very unique for the product to be what consumes you completely.

Later in the piece, Ive talks about Apple’s place as a cultural icon.

I’m not driven by making a cultural impact. That’s just a consequence of taking a remarkably powerful technology and making it relevant. My goal is simply to try to make products that really are meaningful to people.

We could easily pull the entire interview and paste it here for you to read, but you should really hit up the original article instead. There’s plenty more interesting stuff left. [The Independent via psfk]

Yet another way to Wikipedia on your iPhone

Filed under: iPod Family, Internet, iPhone

iPhone web application developer, Comoki, has unveiled a new, iPhone-compatible Wikipedia interface. It’s not alone, of course, but joins the ranks of web applications like iPodia with some nice interface improvements. It has a more reliable “Save” feature and makes some nice formatting decisions on the page, including making bulleted lists collapsible. It also makes use of a little Ajax for zooming images without reloading the page, which you may or may not prefer to the more traditional approach. I did like the search-as-you-type feature on iPodia, which is currently lacking in Comoki’s version.

Of course, you may prefer to go offline with something like wikipedia-iphone (Google Code). Or perhaps make use of an older iPod for such pursuits. Welcome to a wondrous era of unlimited access to questionable information of possibly-dubious origin. Good stuff.

Control Your TiVo With Your Ubuntu Machine

This Ubuntu app isn’t quite as cool as the TiVo remote app for iPhone we saw last week, but the concept of controlling your TiVo over your network is just getting started. By allowing any network device to issue orders, you can essentially make your cellphone, laptop, PC, wall panel or internet connected dog into a remote for your TiVo. [Zatz Not Funny]

Apple Reveals WWDC Plans; Keynote Set for Monday, June 9

Today Apple revealed its plans for WWDC, confirming that the Jobsnote this year will take place 10AM PST on Monday, June 9, rather than the usual Tuesday. (No word as to whether the turtleneck will still be black, or if the 3G iPhone will actually be present.) The WWDC will of course have two separate tracks, one for iPhone and one for OS X. More info at Apple’s WWDC website, or in the press release after the jump. UPDATE: Some things we tend to forget repeatedly around here—WWDC keynotes are always on Monday, Macworld Jobsnotes are the ones that are always on Tuesday. My bad!

The iPhone track will also enable mobile developers to work side by side with Apple engineers to create amazing applications that leverage iPhone’s revolutionary Multi-Touch user interface, animation technology, rich set of APIs, including programming interfaces for Core OS, Core
