This phone was made for talking (your contacts’ names)
I’ve heard a few people searching for a solution that would make the iPhone audibly speak the name of their contacts. So I thought I’d pass on this tip from a reader over at our sister site, Mac OS X Hints. While it’s not automated, it does offer a somewhat…

AppStore is on the way. How much are you willing to pay?

Apple’s iPhone-based AppStore is sure to debut sometime in the next month or two. My guess is that it will launch at WWDC, with select close partners at the launch and then a general opening to the rest of the third-party developers. I’d be quite surprised if AppStore launched and allowed immediate access to everyone who wanted to post an application for sale.

Follow the jump for more thoughts and questions.

Apple iPhone Engineer Job Listing Requires GPS Experience. Hmm…

iphone_map_1.jpgGuys! I don’t know if you heard, but apparently there’s a new version of this cellphone by Apple called the iPhone coming out next month! The rumor is that it’ll come with GPS, allowing for new geotagging-related features, among other things. Adding quite a bit of heft to that rumor is a recent job listing by Apple for an iPhone Product Design Engineer. One of the “preferred experience[s]”? “Integration of wireless antenna (GSM, GPS, Wi-Fi) into mechanical enclosures.” GPS! Boy howdy! But wait, isn’t it a little late to start that job hunt on this go-around? Oh, so many questions! Is anyone else more excited to stop looking for breadcrumbs come June 9th than excited about the actual phone, or is that just me? [Apple via The Inquirer]

Apple Goes To War (This Time Not With Microsoft)

When Apple purchased chip manufacturer P.A. Semi, the Department of Defense was worried. Why? P.A. Semi manufactures chips for ten different military systems, and has $100 million in deals with the DoD over the next four years. And the DoD never expected Apple to keep supporting the sweet, deadly chips.

But they were wrong.

According to The Register, while Apple does not plan to continue modifying/improving P.A. Semi’s PowerPC-based processor architecture, Apple has employed a number of veteran P.A. Semi staff members just for the task of supplying the current chips for years to come.

To us, it seems pretty logical, as if Apple is simply honoring the existing contracts/promises of P.A. Semi. Then again, it’s just such a strange move from such a painstakingly marketed company—Apple and the military certainly make for strange bedfellows. More on this point from The Register:

While the information is limited at this point, we believe the military interest in PA Semi’s low-power chip may have forced Apple’s hand here. Uncle Sam hates to design new missiles only to have the guts ripped out by some dude in a mock turtleneck.

Think deadly? [The Register via Valleywag]

Video of iDial Application for iPhone

It seems as if we are being bombarded with ingenious applications for the iPhone, and iDial is no different. Basically a rotary dial on the touchscreen, it’s probably more time-consuming than useful, but chapeau for coolness. Shame the video is so blurred, though. [Just Another Mobile Phone Blog]
